Step-0

Don’t know how to secure a fully-funded PhD/MS scholarship?

Here is where you should start from.

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟏 – 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐜𝐨𝐮𝐧𝐭𝐫𝐲: Where from you want to do PhD/MS. This is important because the way you secure a scholarship varies from country to country. For example, in Australia, you need to contact the supervisor first. On contrary, in the US, you might need to first secure the scholarship. If you don’t have a country preference, well and good. Let’s move to step 2.

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟐 – 𝐈𝐝𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐢𝐟𝐲 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩: Each country offers various types of PhD/MS scholarships. For instance, in Australia, you can either get a university-funded scholarship or your scholarship can come from the professor’s funding. Identify it so that you can mention your preference while contacting the professor.

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟑 – 𝐂𝐡𝐞𝐜𝐤 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: Even if a professor agrees to supervise and fund your PhD/MS, you still need to adhere to the university’s requirements.

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟒 – 𝐅𝐮𝐥𝐟𝐢𝐥𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐫𝐞𝐪𝐮𝐢𝐫𝐞𝐦𝐞𝐧𝐭𝐬: Once you identify the requirements, start working on fulfilling the requirements. These requirements can include CV, SOP, research proposal, IELTS, etc. You should fulfill these requirements as soon as possible because these would be requirements in most of the scholarships/admissions you would apply for. Therefore, no point in unnecessary waiting anyway.

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 5 – 𝐅𝐢𝐧𝐝 𝐚 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫: Once you identify the scholarship and fulfill the basic requirements, you should find a supervisor most aligned with your research/background. How to find one? Go to the university website and then go to the specific school (e.g., computer science) where you can find the list of all supervisors.

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 6 – 𝐄𝐦𝐚𝐢𝐥 𝐭𝐡𝐞 𝐬𝐮𝐩𝐞𝐫𝐯𝐢𝐬𝐨𝐫: Write a solid and thoroughly proofread email to the identified supervisor. Express your interest in pursuing PhD/MS under his/her supervision. Align your research background with the supervisor’s background and demonstrate how you are the best fit for his/her lab. Happy to share an email template if you need one.

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟕: 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐚𝐝𝐦𝐢𝐬𝐬𝐢𝐨𝐧 𝐚𝐧𝐝 𝐬𝐜𝐡𝐨𝐥𝐚𝐫𝐬𝐡𝐢𝐩: Once a supervisor agrees then apply for admission and scholarship. If you are applying in a country that doesn’t require correspondence with a supervisor, you can go ahead and apply via their online portal without supervisor’s approval.

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟖 – 𝐀𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲 𝐟𝐨𝐫 𝐕𝐢𝐬𝐚: After you successfully secure a PhD/MS position, you will need to apply for a visa. This may require some additional documents.

𝐒𝐭𝐞𝐩 𝟎 – 𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐧 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐈 𝐚𝐩𝐩𝐥𝐲? If you have completed your MS/BS and plan to get a PhD position, you should apply now. If you are currently doing MS, you should wait until the last 6 months of your MS.

Step-1

Required Tests Preparation

In most of universities, the following tests are required for application of admissions but there are still many universities where you can get fully-funded scholarship without these tests. 𝐈 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐡𝐚𝐯𝐞 𝐄𝐧𝐠𝐥𝐢𝐬𝐡 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐢𝐜𝐢𝐞𝐧𝐜𝐲 𝐬𝐜𝐨𝐫𝐞: Many students keep waiting for English scores such as IELTS. In this wait, they waste a lot of time. Don’t wait, just apply. If a professor agrees to supervise you, then you can give IELTS test. Also, in some cases, you can instead provide your university certificate. Don’t let it become a bottleneck.
IELTS be or not IELTS be.

I get asked by beginners (people at the beginning of their search for scholarships and admissions abroad) about the IELTS requirements for admission and to me, it strikes as just an excuse they are looking for just to quit at this stage.

But the answer to that question can go in 2-3 ways:
  1. Some countries/universities wouldn’t need English proficiency certificates (but they will require English proficiency) and can assess your English through a general zoom meeting or by going through your written work i.e., thesis.
  2. Even if needed, you can put forward your application while claiming English proficiency and requesting for consideration of your application. In this case, you can get conditional acceptance/admission but the finality of admission will be contingent upon you getting the desired language score. During lockdown times, Doulingo English Test became a popular and more convenient alternative to the more formal tests like IELTS and TOEFL, and Doulingo score is accepted in most universities. Please note that your CV (past work, interests, skills, motivation) matters more than your English proficiency score in this case. I have seen examples where professors gave time to the candidates for a retake of Doulingo Test because they wanted the same candidate.
  3. If you are really motivated and don’t want to miss out on any opportunity, please do take an English test (most probably IELTS because of its wider acceptability) because these test score are valid for 2 years and if you are looking for a PhD abroad, perhaps there would not be a better time to take IELTS (or any other test) and may be you would not need a retake in either case (in 2 years you could be abroad already or could have better prospects in watan-e-aziz).

This is purely based upon my personal experience and observation. Other people’s opinion can differ and would welcome such comments.

Step - 2

Step-3

Search Universities

𝐖𝐡𝐞𝐫𝐞 𝐬𝐡𝐨𝐮𝐥𝐝 𝐈 𝐬𝐭𝐚𝐫𝐭 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦? Many students don’t know where to start – what is the first step? The first step is to identify what are the different scholarships available around the world. Some are too common – US Fullbright, Erasmus Mundus, Australian RTPS, etc. Others are based on the professor’s funding. Join & follow relevant social media groups & people.
𝐈 𝐝𝐨𝐧’𝐭 𝐠𝐞𝐭 𝐫𝐞𝐩𝐥𝐢𝐞𝐬 𝐟𝐫𝐨𝐦 𝐩𝐫𝐨𝐟𝐞𝐬𝐬𝐨𝐫𝐬: Many students give up just because they don’t receive a reply from a few professors. Not getting a reply doesn’t mean that your profile is not good. (i) send a couple of reminders and try the back door & (ii) move on to other professors. Eventually, you will land where your profile will be valued.
